About Ijen Crater
Kawah Ijen is an active stratovolcano in East Java. It is famous for its blue fire phenomenon. Sulfuric gases escape from cracks and ignite at extreme temperatures. You can only see these flames in complete darkness.
The crater holds a turquoise lake with a pH level below 0.5. It is the most acidic crater lake in the world. The site operates as a working sulfur mine. Miners carry heavy loads of yellow sulfur up the steep walls manually.
Hikers start at Paltuding basecamp. The trail climbs 600 meters over 3.5 kilometers. You must bring a gas mask and a health certificate to enter. Read Trail Difficulty for details on the physical demands.
