Climbing Kawah Ijen starts at 2:00 AM. Temperatures are often near freezing at the trailhead. You need a mix of cold-weather clothing and specific protective equipment to handle the sulfur smoke.

What clothes are best for the night hike?

Dress in layers you can remove as you warm up. The temperature starts near freezing and rises after sunrise.

Wear a warm jacket over a base layer. Add gloves to keep your hands warm and protect them when gripping rocks. Once the sun comes up around 5:30 AM, you will want lighter clothing for the hike down.

Do I need special hiking shoes?

You need sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip. The trail is steep and the crater interior is rocky.

The main ascent is a steep dirt and sand track. The descent into the crater is an 800-meter path covered in loose rocks. Standard sneakers lack the traction needed to prevent slipping on this terrain.

Why is a gas mask mandatory?

A high-quality respirator or gas mask protects you from toxic sulfur dioxide fumes. The smoke near the blue fire vents can be blinding and suffocating.

You must put your mask on before reaching the bottom of the crater. If you do not have your own, you can rent one at the Paltuding basecamp stalls. Check that the filters are in good condition before you start the trek.

How do I see the trail in the dark?

You need a headlamp or a strong flashlight. The hike begins in complete darkness.

The trail has no lighting. A headlamp is much better than a handheld flashlight because it keeps your hands free. You need both hands to maintain three points of contact on the steep rocks during the crater descent.

What else should I pack in my daybag?

Pack plenty of drinking water, small snacks, and protective eyewear. You should also bring any personal medications.

The hike takes 1.5 to 2 hours uphill. Water and snacks provide energy for the 600-meter elevation gain. Protective eyewear or goggles shield your eyes from irritating sulfur smoke at the bottom. If you have sensitive airways, bring an asthma inhaler.

Can I buy or rent gear at the basecamp?

Yes, the Paltuding basecamp has small stalls that rent essential gear. You can rent gas masks, flashlights, and warm coats.

These stalls also sell basic food and hot drinks. Arrive early to secure your rentals before the gate opens at 2:00 AM. Many guided tours already include a gas mask and headlamp in the package price.
