Seeing ignited sulfuric gases at Kawah Ijen requires precise timing. You have a narrow window between the park gate opening and the sun rising to make the 3.5-kilometer trek and view the phenomenon.

What time does the hike start?

The Paltuding entry gate opens for night hikers at 2:00 AM.

Arrive by 1:30 AM to clear the ticketing and health checks. The hike to the crater rim takes 1.5 to 2 hours. After that, you will spend about 45 minutes climbing down into the crater to reach the vents.

When is the best time to see blue fire Ijen?

The dry season, from April to October, is the best time to visit.

During these months, you enjoy clearer visibility of the gases and the turquoise crater lake. The 3-kilometer dirt and sand track is also less slippery than during the rainy season. Plan to see the flames before dawn.

Why do you have to hike at night?

The blue fire is not lava; it is burning sulfuric gas.

These gases escape from solfatara vents at temperatures exceeding 360°C. They ignite upon contact with the air. The resulting flames are relatively dim and can only be seen in pitch-black conditions. Once the sun rises around 5:00 AM, the flames disappear into the daylight.

How long does it take to reach the blue flames?

It takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from the basecamp to the crater floor.

First, you climb 600 meters in elevation over a 3-kilometer uphill track. Then, you descend an 800-meter rocky path into the crater. You must wear a high-quality gas mask for this final section to protect against toxic sulfur dioxide fumes.

What time should I return to the crater rim?

You should leave the crater interior and return to the rim by 5:00 AM.

This timing allows you to watch the sunrise over the highly acidic crater lake. The water has a pH level below 0.5 and turns a striking turquoise color as the morning light hits it. Swimming is strictly prohibited.

Are there days when the park is closed?

Yes, Kawah Ijen closes periodically for environmental recovery (often one day a month); check the current schedule before you go.

Park authorities use this closure for environmental recovery. Check the schedule and book your e-tickets in advance through the BBKSDA East Java portal to avoid arriving on a closed day.

Questions travellers ask

Can I see the blue fire during the day?

No. The burning sulfuric gases are not bright enough to be visible in sunlight. You must visit in complete darkness before sunrise.

How cold is it before sunrise?

Temperatures can be near freezing before dawn at an elevation of 2,386 meters. Bring a warm jacket, gloves, and layers for the hike.

Does weather affect the visibility?

Yes. Heavy rain or strong winds can obscure the flames or push toxic smoke toward hikers. This makes the dry season the safest and clearest time to visit.
